Charlton Spotlight #7 features a lively, lengthy conversation with none other than George Wildman, Charlton Comics’ last and greatest editor, with cartoonist Hy Eisman sitting in. This informal chat with the artists among fans and friends finds George reminiscing about his long tenure at Charlton, from his selection as artist for the Charlton Popeye comic series to his term as Charlton’s managing editor, from his early career in advertising and his 1950s comics work at Charlton to candid comments on the artists and writers he worked with, including Steve Ditko, Pat Boyette, Tom Sutton, Ray Dirgo, Joe Gill, Nick Cuti, and Bill Pearson, from his post-Charlton career in children’s books to the specialty work he’s doing today. Hy Eisman, current cartoonist on the Popeye and Katzenjammer Kids Sunday comic strips, weighs in with background on his own unique Charlton experience. Rounding out the issue are two rich memoirs of the late, great Dick Giordano by ex-Charlton Comics writer Paul Kupperberg and comics historian Ron Frantz, along with a new page of Nick Cuti’s Weird Kids cartoons and the usual news and reviews, plus the wrap-up of the Charlton Comics by-year checklist.
